An Open Letter to Netflix Korea
An Open Letter to Netflix Korea
Dear Netflix Korea,
I am upset because of you today. As you probably know, after a long day at work, people like to blow off steam and just relax. Back in the day, I used to go on pub crawls with friends but I dont do that anymore. I dont recover from hangovers quite like the way I used to, you see. These days, after work, I like to come home to watch movies or TV shows on your streaming website.
I am a man of simple tastes. A few David Attenborough-narrated documentaries, new episodes of Better Call Saul and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and a few movies here and there to help me take my mind off reality for an hour or two - these are the kinds of things that I like. Now combine that with a bottle of Guinness and, boy, at least for an hour or two out of my day, Im as happy as a clam.
When you guys started doing business in Korea earlier this year, I knew that I wasnt going to get as many movies or TV shows like my friends do in America. I knew that licensing, bureaucratic red tape, captioning, translating, and all of that legal mumbo jumbo were going to make things slow at first. But I signed up for an account anyway because I remembered that I enjoyed using your service way back in the day when I was still in college - before Netflix started streaming and was still mailing DVDs to customers. So, you know, let this be the first lesson: customer and brand loyalty are vital.
As time went on, as I knew it would happen, more and more shows got added to Netflix Korea. Granted, Ive either already seen them before or I didnt care for a lot of the shows. Im sorry, but Zeitgeist is as much a documentary as I am a Miss Korea contestant. But occasionally, there would be a few shows that I really enjoyed. House of Cards and Brooklyn Nine-Nine were very nice additions. And so were Planet Earth and The Blue Planet. You guys even added Timur Vermes Look Whos Back!
But today, without so much as a warning or a notice of any kind whatsoever, quite a few of those shows that I was watching or were about to watch were suddenly removed from your library. That was quite rude of you.
Ive been a very understanding customer. Ive been understanding that my options would be much more limited than your American customers are accustomed to and Ive understood that it would take longer for the shows to arrive. But to have been given access to those shows, and then suddenly have them taken away from me without so much as an explanation despite the fact that I am a paying customer... well, how would YOU feel if you were me? If your answer is not "miffed," or any other synonymous words, youd be wrong or lying.
Even if you had made an announcement beforehand, or left a note on the website afterwards, I would have still been annoyed, but I wouldnt have been this upset. This is why customer service is very important. Lesson two, guys. Customer service is very important. And you guys screwed it up.
I would like for you to appreciate the fact that I am writing this open letter to you guys. Typically, if I am unhappy with a business, I dont complain. I just dont go back. Considering the other options I have, I often think that complaining is a waste of time when I can just simply go elsewhere. Thats why I havent been to McDonalds since 2007. The fact that I am penning this letter shows that I really like your business. So read on because the next bit is related to what I just said.
Im a free market kind of guy. So I fully understand that I do not have the right to your services. I cannot make demands that you are unable or unwilling to meet precisely because I have no right to your time or your services. As a paying customer, I only have the privilege. But similarly, you do not have the right to my money either. My money is mine to spend and I can spend my money, or not spend my money, in any way I please.
At this point, I would like to remind you that you arent dealing with an American customer who has no choice but to put up with his shitty cable company that provides Internet speeds that havent updated much since the early 2000s. I am a Korean customer who has Internet speeds so fast that if I chose to torrent all four seasons of House of Cards, it wouldnt take me more than half an hour. And it wouldnt cost me any money at all.
Personally, I dont like to torrent movies or TV shows. Theres the potential of infecting my computer with viruses and even if there arent any viruses; I dont like taking up that much space on my hard drive for things that I will only watch once. So, I dont want to waste my money buying external hard drives for something so frivolous either. And as someone who thinks that thievery and piracy are immoral, I really feel like a hypocrite when I torrent something.
However, I think the important thing here for you to know is that Ive got lots of options to choose from. And so does every one else in Korea. Some who might not share my sense of morals.
I like Netflix. I really do. And as I said, Im understanding. Im not asking you to make every single movie or TV show that you have in your database to be made available right now. That would be unreasonable and I am not an unreasonable person. All I am asking for is a little courtesy. An explanation of why some shows were suddenly removed or a generic statement regarding when you anticipate those shows might return, if they will return, is the LEAST FUCKING THING THAT YOU CAN DO!
Consider this as strike one, Netflix Korea. So, please, dont screw over your Korean customers. Its not very nice.
Sincerely,
The Korean Foreigner

Paper Blogging
Paper Blogging
Earlier this week, I had a chance to visit a school in my district, where they found a unique way to introduce blogging to junior and intermediate aged students.
While the entire school was exploring the theme Global Citizenship, student writing on the topic was posted for a public audience. Traditionally, student writing is read by an audience of one (the teacher); but these students had their writing posted on a hallway bulletin board... with a twist.
With sticky notes available nearby, visitors to the display were encouraged to comment publicly on student work. Commenters could see threads developing, and the original authors were able to engage in discussion with a real world audience. The ideas of the authors were considered, challenged, and celebrated in a highly interactive way.
By engaging an impermanent tool, students and teachers were able to explore many e-writing concepts. Students learned about: why authors might want to filter comments; how to deal with anonymous comments; and when it might be appropriate to reference and link to the writing of others. Most valuable of all, they discovered the benefits and challenges of being an involved member of a learning community.
Relatedly, this project led me to consider what might happen if students were required to post Facebook-style poster pages in public places. Even though some students might be shy to share personal photos, or suggestive comments on a school wall, it would reinforce the lesson that such posts on the Internet are commonly accessible to a much broader audience.
Are you aware of similar paper-based strategies that can be used to teach students skills that are transferable to the Read-Write Web?

Notice me, take my hand
Why are we strangers when
Our love is strong
Why carry on without me
Everytime I try to fly, I fall
Without my wings, I feel so small
I guess I need you, baby
And everytime I see you in my dreams
I see your face, its haunting me
I guess I need you, baby
I make believe that you are here
Its the only way I see clear
What have I done
You seem to move on easy
And everytime I try to fly, I fall
Without my wings, I feel so small
I guess I need you, baby
And everytime I see you in my dreams
I see your face, youre haunting me
I guess I need you, baby
I may have made it rain
Please forgive me
My weakness caused you pain
And this songs my sorry
At night I pray
That soon your face will fade away
And everytime I try to fly, I fall
Without my wings, I feel so small
I guess I need you, baby
And everytime I see you in my dreams
I see your face, youre haunting me
I guess I need you, baby

Seodaemun Prison History Museum
Seodaemun Prison History Museum
On the second day of our long weekend in Seoul, after relaxing and catching up on sleep in the morning, we went to the old Seoul Prison, now known as the Seodaemun Prison History Museum.
Even though the prison was used after the Japanese occupation ended, the displays mainly focus on the harsh treatment Koreans suffered under Japanese rule. As a result it has an anti Japanese vibe, but Im not sure how you could tell the story in a way that honors the thousands of Koreans who died without sounding a little anti Japanese.
The prison is right next to Dongnimmun Station on subway line 3 which makes it really easy to get to.
There is no mistaking the prison. It stands out like a sore thumb with its high brick wall and watch tower.
Today, only a fraction of the original prison complex remains standing, but you can still see the workshop, some of the cells, the execution room, the torture rooms in the basement, the walls and the watch towers.
Entry is cheap. Only 3000 won ($3) for adults. 1000 won ($1) for children.
Here is a scale model of the whole prison complex at its peak when it saw up to 32,000 Koreans pass through its gates before Korea was liberated in 1945, most of whom were held because of their participation in the Korean independence movement.
Here is a graph showing the number of prisoners held at this prison during the Japanese occupation years. The prison started with a capacity of 500 people, but was crammed with over 3000 people after the 1st March independence movement in 1919. Many of the independence fighters were executed or died from the brutal Japanese treatment until South Korea was liberated in 1945.
If you dont speak or read Korean, dont fret. Most of the information boards have both English and Korean, though sometimes I dont think the translation captures all the information in the Korean text.
The Japan-Korea annexation treaty from 1910 on display.
One of the prison cell buildings on the right.
This map shows the different areas of Korea that were resisting Japanese occupation, with the red dogs indicating where the organizational centers for the resistance were.
One of the resistance leaders.
This hall is a chilling reminder of how lucky we are in this day and age. This hall a tribute to the deceased to gave their lives for national independence. On its walls are 5,000 of the prison records for Korean inmates who died at at the hands of the Japanese prison guards.
Most of the Koreans housed in the prison were men, but there was a small subset of women too. I dread to think of how they were treated.
One of the shackles prisoners wore.
And this was a heavy weight they would wear around their waste to make escape more difficult.
Pictured here are Koreans who were forced to join the Japanese military. Korean solders would stand in the front line to protect the Japanese soldiers from bullets.
A Korean news paper from 1929 about the exploits of Korean independence fighters.
Japanese would interrogate Koreans not in police stations, but here in the basement (torture dungeon) of the prison. Prior to interrogation, prisoners would be psychologically tortured by being locked in a room adjacent to the torture cells so that they could hear the painful shouting of those being tortured.
The Japanese used a broad array or torture techniques, including bamboo spikes under the finger nails, cutting of bodily extremities, peeling off skin, and rupturing internal organs. Another favourite of the Japanese was to lock prisoners inside a box with sharp nails poking through the walls, and then shaking the box.
Prisoners would be tied down and then beaten with sticks.
Or be subjected to water torture.
Prisoners were also forced to stand in tiny boxes with no room to move.
Prisoners had this basket placed over their head so as to obfuscate their identity.
We then wondered through one of the cell blocks. The inmates spent most of the day in either cells or the factories (helping with the Japanese war effort). the cells were crammed full of inmates, so much so that they could not sleep well. The cells were unsanitary with no toilets, heating or cooling. In Summer inmates would die of heat exhaustion and frostbite in winter.
Behind the cell blocks (left of the picture below) was the workshop (right of the picture below).
Inmates were forced to work for between 10 and 15 hours a day. When moving from the factories back to the jail cells, inmates were forced to jump a wooden bar in the nude as a means to inspect weather dangerous articles were being carried.
In total, 12 factories were constructed within Seodaemun Prison. Prisoners produced textiles, clothes, bricks and paper.
During World War II all prisons were mobilized to produce war supplies.
Every brick manufactured at the prison was stamped with this logo.
Looking around the prison, you can see the mark everywhere.
Behind the execution building (sorry, no photos were allowed there) was a secret tunnel where the Japanese would secretly remove the executed bodies from the prison.
There was a small exercise yard for prisoners to stretch their legs in, but I imagine when you work 10 to 14 hours a day, you dont have much time for exercising.
We then exited the prison and walked down to Dongnimmun (Independence Gate).
Dongnimmun is a memorial stone gate built after the Gabo Reform (1894~1896) by the Independence Club to pledge their determination for independence. The Gabo Reform aimed for internal and systematic reform of the Joseon government. However, the reform movement was not successful due to the intervention of foreign powers.
